Attacks on democracy need to be prevented to preserve people’s faith

Once Digambar Kamat: Goa Chief Ministera seven day CM: another time a 17 days’ government. As many as 19 Chief Ministers in 20 years; Goa legislative assembly is an epitome of instability. The recent crisis in Goa is nothing but repetition of the number game which politicians play.

Although the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has managed to save his government. The question is, for how long? The way Speaker Pratap Singh Rane saved the Goa Government by refraining two members from voting, it was obvious that he would invite severe criticism for his move. Even BJP needs to be criticized for parading 20 MLAs before the President. “It was sheer mockery of democracy. Sarkaria Commission’s report had condemned parading MLAs before the President & BJP has presented a very bad example,” says renowned political analyst Mahesh Rangarajan.

Not just Goa, all small states, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Pudduchery & even Jharkhand, has faced similar problems. Leader of the Opposition in Goa, Manohar Parikkar himself admits that small state is a problem. While talking to B&E from Goa, he said, “A single party has won clear majority only once in last 20 years. It is a perpetual problem because anti-defection law has proved useless many a time in different states too.” Parikkar himself suggests a solution of fix term for legislative assembly. “Since public is not giving complete majority, so it is important to find other solutions. Besides, a fix term for legislative assembly, powers of interpretation of anti-defection law should rest with the High Court or Election Commission.”

Such crisis only showcases ills of Indian democracy. The need is to plug the loop-holes in the system before it dies a tragic death.
